Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2 plot & Netflix teaser trailer

David and Lucy in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Good news, fellow chooms! After much speculation, Netflix has officially given Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 the green-light, so here’s everything you need to know about the anime show’s return, from release date speculation to plot details.

The Netflix series is based on Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red’s infamously rocky open-world RPG. While the game launched to a mixed response due to bugs and glitches, its worldbuilding, lore, and updates helped it find redemption.

But Cyberpunk: Edgerunners never had that problem. Studio Trigger’s vibrant animation, gut-punch storytelling, and unforgettable soundtrack made the 2022 series a surprise critical and commercial hit, even helping to revive interest in the original game.

That was in 2022, and with the show only intended to be a standalone story told across its 10 episodes, there were fears it would never get a renewal. But that all changed on July 4, 2025, when Season 2 was announced at Anime Expo 2025 – and there’s a big change.

Is there a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 release date?

Not yet. But the good news is that we likely won’t have to wait as long as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 1, with some estimates saying we may even see it in late 2025/early 2026.

With the first chapter, the project was announced in June 2020, but it didn’t land on the streaming service until September 2022 – more than two years later. However, there are some good signs it won’t take as long this time round.

The biggest is that we’ve already got promotional art and a teaser trailer (more on this shortly). The Season 1 teaser landed in June 2022, just a few months prior to release.

We most likely won’t be getting the second run quite so soon, but it’s at least promising to see promo material already.

There were previously concerns that Trigger was too busy working on Delicious in Dungeon and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt follow-ups, but with Season 2 now officially going ahead and Edgerunners’ previous success, this is now the top priority.

Season 2 will once again consist of 10 episodes, although it will turn focus to another corner of Night City.

Who will be in the cast?

The characters of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, including Lucy and David

Right now, there’s no news on the voice cast and characters of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2, as the follow-up is a “standalone sequel” and will therefore see a new roster of Night City dwellers front and center.

One thing’s for certain: the character deaths in Season 1 have stuck. As the teaser brutally reminds us, “David is dead, but Night City lives on.”

We also know that voice acting veteran Wendee Lee will be serving as the casting director for the English dub of Season 2. Taking to X/Twitter, she wrote, “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II. I cannot wait to cast and voice direct this badass sequel.”

What we know about the plot

Character in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2

Season 2 won’t pick up where we left off with David and Lucy – instead, it’s a brand-new story set in a different part of Night City. According to Netflix and CD Projekt Red, it’ll be an entirely new 10-episode season from the world of Cyberpunk 2077.

As per the official description, “CD Projekt Red and animation studio Trigger are returning to Night City with an entirely new story, fresh characters, and a raw, realistic take on the most dangerous city of the dark future.

“At the helm of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is director Kai Ikarashi, lead character designer Kanno Ichigo, and the creative minds behind Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ story: Hugo Award winner Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka.”

There’s another detail we know: it’s set to be more brutal and bloodier. During the panel at Anime Expo 2025, Sztybor said: “I just wanted to make the whole world sad… when people are sad, I’m a bit happy.”

He went on to say Season 2 will be “of course, sadder, but it will also be darker, more bloody, and more raw.”

While David’s story has come to a definitive end, the themes of self-destruction, corporate exploitation, and what it means to “make it” in Night City are sure to carry over.

Netflix drops Season 2 teaser trailer

On July 5, Netflix dropped the first teaser trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2, and it’s as devastating as it is beautiful. Check it out:

As said, the clip reminds us all that David is dead. However, it also points out that there are plenty of new stories to be told. Cut between imagery from the first chapter is new concept art animation, all of which is backed by the chill vibes of ‘Dive’ by Beach House.

Alongside this, Netflix wrote, “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is now in production!” Thousands of fans have commented on the trailer, with one writing, “Thanks for making me smile and tear up at the same time again.”

“As if the pain and suffering from Season 1 wasn’t enough,” said another. “I’m ready, make me cry again Edgerunners.” A third added, “Never thought we’d get more of this show but I am here for it.”
