Daredevil Born Again Season 2 leaks should have you worried about Matt Murdock’s MCU future

Matt Murdock in Born again

Daredevil Born Again isn’t even halfway done, but Season 2 is already in production, and you know what that means? Set photos.

Yes, it seems Hell’s Kitchen has sprung a leak, and before Marvel Studios could call in the plumbers to fix things, pictures of Charlie Cox and Deborah Ann Woll filming on the streets of New York City had already flooded the web.

What’s interesting about these photos (which we can’t share as we don’t own the rights), though, is that both Cox and Woll are sporting new looks in the upcoming Marvel show. Cox has swapped Murdock’s classic suit (not the red one) for a more casual hoodie, while Woll appears to have dyed her hair red (or Karen has, at least).

Now, on paper, this might seem relatively innocuous – there’s no law against changing your hair color, and Matt should be allowed to enjoy dress-down Friday every now and then – yet I don’t think there’s anything innocent about these glow-ups. In fact, I’d go so far as to say they hint at more bad news on the horizon for poor Matt Murdock.

Based on these photos, it seems likely that in Born Again Season 2, Matt Murdock will be exposed as Daredevil, forcing him and his closest friends to go on the run. Why do I think this? There are two reasons. The first is that in the MCU, a hoodie is the go-to disguise for heroes on the lam.

Think of Steve Rogers in Captain America, Scott Lang in Ant-Man and The Wasp, Captain Marvel infiltrating SHIELD, and even Thor got in on the action. They all donned the hoodie to hide. In fact, the hoodie, hat, and glasses combo has become such a cliche in the fandom that opinion pieces were actually written about Black Widow when it didn’t use them (yes, really).

Matt slipping into the uniform of the disaffected Millennial (I’m sure that’s a tautology) suggests he’s trying to lay low. It’s also notable that Matt isn’t wearing his usual red-tinted glasses or carrying his signature cane, which would further disguise him from anyone looking for a blind lawyer.

The second reason I’m so certain Matt’s been unmasked is because in the comics it happens almost every other day. Karen once told her drug dealer, who went on to tell Kingpin, Brian Michael Bendis had the press leak it, and on one occasion, Spider-Man just put it in a letter (nice one, Peter. Matt’s crying now).

The point I’m trying to make here is that there’s a long tradition of Matt’s identity being public in the pages of Marvel Comics, and it wouldn’t surprise me if this was a storyline the MCU bigwigs were keen to explore. After all, we’ve already seen adaptations of Born Again, Devil’s Reign, and even Guardian Devil. There aren’t that many “classic Daredevil stories” left to do.

So, if Matt has been unmasked, who did it? Well, you might think this has Wilson Fisk’s grubby fingerprints all over it. After all, he’s known Matt’s secret for a while now and has made no secret of his antipathy towards vigilantes operating in New York City.

Yet that doesn’t really seem like Fisk’s style to me – he’s the type of person who sees the value in leverage, and there’s power in knowing a hero’s secret identity.

So who will leak it? Well, I think it will be none other than Matt himself. Why? Well, because in Mark Waid’s Daredevil run, he had Matt do just that to avoid perjuring himself in court, and there’d be a sort of grim irony in ol’ Hornhead revealing his own identity, considering what he did to the White Tiger.

What do you think? Do you think Matt’s going to be unmasked, or have I been blinded by my own comic book knowledge (it’s better than being blinded by mysterious chemicals… even if I didn’t get superpowers).
