Dexter Resurrection fans anxiously waiting to see what the show plans to do with the mysterious New York Ripper character got an answer from the showrunner himself amid rumors of Bryan Cranston playing the role.

Throughout the first season of Dexter Resurrection, one killer was constantly mentioned, sparking countless theories about their identity: The New York Ripper. (Spoilers if you haven’t watched the show. You’ve been warned.)

The killer never makes an appearance, but we learn that they used a long rod with a sharp hook at the end to kill their victims, with their weapon of choice being featured in Leon Prater’s collection.

Is Don Framt really the name of the New York Ripper?

Although The Ripper had stopped killing for several years, we learn that he has continued to torment his victims through disturbing phone calls. Additionally, the killer is an obsession for Detective Claudette Wallace, who was originally assigned to the case.

In the season finale, after killing Prater and taking files on other killers, Dexter leaves a dossier on the New York Ripper for NYPD to find, revealing his name is “Don Framt” – though it’s unclear if this is an alias or if The Ripper angle has come to an end.

Dexter Resurrection showrunner calls New York Ripper a “delicious opportunity”

Fans had numerous theories on the identity of the Ripper throughout the season’s run, ranging from the UrCar driver Blessing to even The Trinity Killer’s son, Jonah Mitchell.

Speculation has even mounted that Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston could be cast as The Ripper in Season 2, though nothing has been confirmed just yet.

Amid these rumors, showrunner Clyde Phillips has responded directly to the fan theories and the possibility of The Ripper showing up in a future season.

Speaking on the Dissecting Dexter Podcast, Phillips gave a hint that the series was far from finished with the Ripper story and if he was aware that almost everyone on the show was a suspect.

“Yes, I am aware of that. They thought that Gigi was The Ripper. They thought that [Detective] Oliva was the New York Ripper. They thought that Cody, Dexter’s [step-son] you know, Rita’s kid,” Phillips recalled. “Even Charlie’s mom was suggested at one point.”

Based on Phillips’ comments, it’s looking like the Ripper story is too good to pass up when they start working on what comes next on Dexter Resurrection.

“I’m not to say if anything is right. I’m just saying it’s a delicious opportunity for us when we get into the writing room to make it feel more real and less theoretical.”

One thing fans shouldn’t expect, however, is for the Trinity prequel series to move forward, as the showrunner revealed it’s been put on the back burner after Dexter: Original Sin was canceled before it even had the chance to introduce a younger version of James Doakes.
