Did Raffaele Sollecito lie? Update on The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Episode 5, ‘Mr. Nobody’, provides Knox’s then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito a backstory, as well as portraying his interrogation, proving his alibi switch-up was more than a simple case of lying.

The new Hulu series details the tragic 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher while she was studying in Perugia, Italy. Although Rudy Guede was the sole perpetrator, Amanda Knox and her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were falsely convicted.

What followed was a media storm like no other, with Knox painted as a sexually deviant “Luciferina” by the press and prosecutors, while Sollecito was described as her “puppet”, despite the lack of evidence of their involvement.

While prosecutors leaned heavily into circumstantial claims and shifting testimonies, repeated appeals highlighted the absence of forensic evidence tying the pair to Kercher’s murder, as well as the role of flawed police interrogations in shaping the original case.

Did Raffaele Sollecito lie?

First, let’s address the murder case. In the eyes of the law, Sollecito did not lie about being involved in Meredith Kercher’s murder. He was convicted alongside Knox in 2009, but after years of appeals, both were fully exonerated by Italy’s highest court in 2015.

Sollecito spent nearly four years in prison before his acquittal, and no physical evidence ever tied him to the crime. The confusion about his comments stems from his alibi, but this is made clearer in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.

On the night of November 5, 2007, Sollecito was interrogated for hours without a lawyer. At first, he insisted he was home with Knox, that she slept in his bed, and that they had been together the entire night.

Under pressure, however, he wavered, saying it was possible she had left his apartment without him noticing. This inconsistency was seized upon by police, who then told Knox that her boyfriend had turned on her.

Sollecito himself described the experience as disorienting and coercive, saying officers insulted Knox in front of him and insisted his situation wouldn’t go well for him if he wasn’t telling the truth – despite the fact that he knew what happened that night.

He gave an interview about this moment in the 2016 Netflix documentary Amanda Knox, saying that he went to the police station with Knox for questioning.

“They were starting to be very rude to me and asking me questions about what happened that night,” he says.

“That night, I know that I was in my apartment. I know that I spent the night with Amanda. I know she slept with me. But they were not satisfied, and they were pushing and aggressive and they became the worst of the worst.

“This policeman told me that Amanda lied all the time, she was a stupid slut, a cow that didn’t care about me. ‘Your situation is very, very bad.’ After a long time, the reality around you turns to twist and don’t be so clear.”

With mounting pressure, Sollecito changed his story, paving the way for the detectives to use the same tactics on Knox. He later said that his original statement was the truth.
