What happens at the end of Drop? New movie’s surprising conclusion

Violet in Drop

Drop is a brand-new thriller horror directed by Happy Death Day’s Christopher Landon, and it has many twists, turns, and murderous plots before its surprising ending.

The movie stars The White Lotus’ Megann Fahy and It Ends With Us’ Brandon Sklenar as Violet and Henry, a couple on a nice dinner date in a high-rise building restaurant.

However, things take a sinister turn when Violet starts receiving anonymous AirDrop messages on her phone, which grow increasingly threatening.

All of this culminates in a bloody battle and a race against time. Warning: spoilers ahead and some may find this content distressing.

Drop ending explained

After a horrifying ordeal, the Drop ending is surprisingly upbeat, showing Violet and Henry on the happy date they should have been on in the first place. This one, however, takes place in the hospital as Henry recovers from his injuries.

Initially, it seems like Violet’s about to be plunged back into another nightmare when she receives another anonymous drop message on her phone. However, her sister Jen walks in and reveals it was a prank, saying, “Too soon?” Yes, Jen, it’s definitely too soon.

Thankfully, Violet’s son Toby also makes it out of the events of Drop unscathed. But why is Henry in the hospital? To understand that, let’s go back to the beginning.

What happened to Violet before the date?

We learn early on in the new movie that Violet’s planned date with Henry is her first since her husband Blake died. Flashback scenes show Blake was physically abusive towards Violet, which is why she now works as a counsellor for DV survivors.

It’s assumed that she was the one who shot Blake in self defense after he beat her badly. However, as the flashbacks continue, it’s revealed that she was unable to pull the trigger. Blake then turned the gun on their son Toby, who was a baby at that time, before shooting himself.

So, Blake really ended his own life. Violet has had to deal with the trauma of this, and she was finally ready to jump back into the dating pool. But this becomes the reason she’s targeted by the villains of Drop.

Drop involves a sinister murder plot

You see, even before Henry turns up for the date, Violet starts receiving anonymous drop messages on her phone, which are initially only mildly concerning.

When Henry arrives, she tells him about the drops. He assumes it’s some kids messing around and tries to help her find them, but to no avail.

Things take a dark turn, however, when the poster tells Violet to check her nanny cam at home, where Jen is babysitting Toby. She sees a man in a balaclava holding a gun, leaving her understandably shaken.

Alongside this, a message reads, “Keep your mouth shut.” Essentially, if Violet says anything to anyone in the restaurant, they die, and if she doesn’t do what she’s told, her sister and child will be killed.

The perpetrator has installed recording devices in the restaurant, hacked into the security cam system, and cloned her phone, meaning she’s under a watchful eye.

Gunman in Drop

Initially, they just want her to delete the memory card of photos on Henry’s camera, which she manages to get away with discreetly. However, the next task proves more difficult: she has to slip poison into Henry’s drink, killing him.

Violet eventually sneaks the poison into a shot, but before Henry drinks it, she figures out who the perpetrator is: Richard, a seemingly innocent diner on a blind date.

She suddenly realizes that he knew her name before she even told him, and goes over to confront him, testing her theory by offering him one of the poisoned shots, which he refuses.

Why did they want Henry killed?

During the date, Henry reveals that he worked for the mayor for five years. But it’s only in the final act of the new movie that we learn the mayor had been involved in an embezzlement scheme.

Henry was not okay with this, and so he’d taken photos of the evidence – hence the SD card task – which he was set to pass on to the FBI.

Richard and his cronies wanted Henry killed, but they also couldn’t risk getting blood on their hands. Knowing Violet’s traumatic history, they thought it would be easy to frame her for the murder.

What they didn’t predict is that Violet is one step ahead. Even though she made it appear as if she spiked the shots, the truth is she slipped the poison into Richard’s dessert.

By the time she tells him, it’s too late – the poison’s already in his system. But before he dies, all hell breaks loose.

The final battle

Jen attacks gunman in Drop

Richard goes to shoot Violet, but Henry jumps in front of her and takes the bullet. Just before the big bad dies, he calls the assassin at Violet’s house and tells him to kill Jen and Toby.

Violet covers Henry’s wound and tells him the emergency services are on their way, and then it’s a race against time to make it back home and save her family.

What follows is a violent battle of two sisters against the gunman, but it’s actually Toby who saves the day. Just as it looks like his mom is about to get killed, he sends over his remote control toy truck, with a gun on the back.

Without hesitation, she picks it up and shoots the gunman, and finally Violet, Jen, and Toby are safe.

This brings us to the end of Drop, where justice prevails. The criminal mayor gets arrested, while Violet and Henry get to enjoy their hospital bed date. They both agree that their next date should be something “boring.”
