Heartstopper Season 4 gets massive change as Netflix reveals finale plans

Nick and Charlie walk down the street in Heartstopper

It’s been six months since Heartstopper Season 3 dropped on Netflix, and fans expected a renewal soon after. Instead, they’ve been left waiting for a massive change now confirmed for the story’s end.

As our favorite gang of friends starts to grow up, a lot’s changing in their lives. Nick (Kit Connor) is heading to university, with Charlie’s (Joe Locke) coming out in both heartfelt and horny ways.

Season 3 wasn’t exactly left on a cliffhanger, though. Nick got back from a campus tour just in time to see Charlie play with his band at a local fair, feeling more in love with each other than ever.

As fans know, the binge-worthy TV show still has one graphic novel to adapt… that hasn’t even been released yet. We’ve been waiting to see if Season 4 would ever be greenlit, and now we have an unexpected answer.

A Heartstopper movie is coming to Netflix instead of Season 4

Instead of getting Heartstopper Season 4 in an official capacity, Alice Oseman’s story will wrap up with a Netflix movie, though no release date has been confirmed for this.

The streaming service confirmed plans on April 22, 2025, posting on social media, “Heartstopper will return, bigger than ever. A Heartstopper movie, our final chapter based on Alice Oseman’s upcoming volume six, is coming.”

Now it’s unlikely we’ll get this movie soon, given the obvious problem of Volume 6 not being released yet. It was originally expected to drop at the end of 2024, but rumors now think a December 2025 release date for the graphic novel is the most likely.

Until we get the book, filming can’t begin – unless Oseman is busy working on both things on once. Early reports suggest filming could begin as early as this summer, with Locke and Connor on board as executive producers.

Regardless, we might notice a distinct difference in how old our casts feel this time around, but the delay could come with some positives.

The fact Heartstopper is shooting a movie rather than a full TV series means some former cast members, such as Olivia Colman, might be able to make a return. Colman was unable to come back for Season 3 due to filming commitments, but a smaller production shoot might mean things could work this time around.

“I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story,” Oseman said in a press statement. “I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”

Heartstopper Seasons 1-3 are available on Netflix now. In the meantime, catch up with who Oliver Spring is, the Season 3 soundtrack, and why Ben wasn’t in new episodes.
