Highest grossing movies of 2025 so far

The biggest box office hits of the year thus far, with family fare like Ne Zha 2, Lilo & Stitch, and A Minecraft Movie dominating.

2024 was an interesting year in cinemas, with animated movies like Inside Out 2, Moana 2, Despicable Me 4, and Kung Fu Panda 4 all making a mint, while Deadpool & Wolverine was the biggest non-animated effort.

That was part of the Marvel Cinematic universe, and 2025 has been a fascinating year for the studio, with Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and Fantastic Four: First Steps all hitting screens within months of each other over the summer. Meanwhile, DC has planted its flag in the ground via James Gunn’s new Superman movie.

So, the following is a list of the films that have been packing them in since January 1, 2025.

Here’s the Top 10 movies of the year, globally, meaning we’re listing each film’s worldwide gross:

1. Ne Zha 2 – $1.902 billion (release date: January 29)
2. Lilo & Stitch – $1.036 billion (release date: May 23)
3. A Minecraft Movie – $957 million (release date: April 4)
4. Jurassic World Rebirth – $862 million (release date: July 2)
5. How to Train Your Dragon – $633 million (release date: June 13)
6. F1: The Movie – $623 million (release date: June 27)
7. Superman – $615 million (release date: July 11)
8. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – $598 million (release date: May 23)
9. The Fantastic Four: First Steps – $517 million (release date: July 25)
10. Captain America: Brave New World – $415 million (release date February 14)

We’ll update this list weekly as and when new movies crack the Top 10, but Ne Zha 2 is the big story thus far, with the Chinese sequel now the biggest animated film of all time, and the fifth highest-grossing feature ever.

That gross is rising this month, due to the English-language release hitting US screens.

As for what’s coming soon, it’s slim pickings in terms of blockbusters, with Tron: Ares next up on October 10.
