House of the Dragon Season 3 is set to pick up straight after the Season 2 finale, according to one star, which means we’re heading into a pivotal battle.
The second season ended on an enormous cliffhanger, made up of loads of small (but important) teases for what’s coming. Alicent agreed to let Rhaenyra take King’s Landing, Aegon fled the city, Otto was seen imprisoned… somewhere, and Rhaena found Sheepstealer.
With the support of the Triarchy’s fleet, we also saw Tyland Lannister hit the open seas, on a collision course with the Sea Snake and the Velaryon fleet.
Season 2 should have included what happens next – but it didn’t, which means House of the Dragon Season 3 is guaranteed to open on the bloodiest naval battle in Westeros history: the Battle of the Gullet.
House of the Dragon Season 3 set to open with Battle of the Gullet

Speaking to Collider ahead of The Girlfriend’s release, Olivia Cooke (who plays Alicent) said: “Well, I think I can say for the show that it is, you know, it starts off with a bang.
“The first two eps were essentially supposed to be our finale last year. So you can just imagine coming into that sort of energy. It’s bigger and more ferocious than ever before, I think is what I can say.”
Cooke may not have used the words “the Battle of Gullet”, but that’s what she’s talking about. It’s the natural next step of the story, and when Season 3 was confirmed by HBO, a report noted that it’d have a “major battle” originally thought to be part of Season 2.
Also, in an interview with Deadline, HBO exec Francesca Orsi said the battle will be “worth the wait.”
“I was just on set and saw all the elements and what was behind it. I’m so glad we waited because it’s going to be better than ever, and I don’t think we had the time at that point to do what it is that we’ve achieved now this season,” she said.

“It’s just so massive, we needed the time to build it. One of the lead producers on it [Kevin de la Noy] worked on Titanic, so all that he brought in terms of acumen of what happened on the Titanic and how that entire experience is built, he brings that expertise to it.”
Unfortunately, this means we’ll almost definitely say goodbye to one character – if you want to spoil it for yourself, you can find out who will die in the Battle of the Gullet.
