A Complete Unknown is an Oscar-nominated Bob Dylan biopic that stars Timothée Chalamet as the music legend – here’s how you can now watch the movie at home.

Writer-director James Mangold hit biopic gold when he told the Johnny Cash story in Walk the Line, and now he’s returning to a similar era and musical genre to focus on Bob Dylan.

But where the Cash movie covered decades, the Dylan film focuses on a very specific period when the singer moved to New York, transformed the folk scene, and went electric.

Timothée Chalamet has received widespread acclaim for his take on Dylan – as well as an Oscar nomination – and now you can watch his remarkable performance from the comfort of your armchair.

But A Complete Unknown is also now available digitally, though it will currently set you back quite a few bucks. The movie can be purchased from Amazon Video for $29.99, while you can rent it from the same outlet for $24.99.

A Complete Unknown is a Searchlight Pictures production, which is a subsidiary of Disney, so the movie will stream on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ in the US, and on Disney+ elsewhere.

As for when that will happen, it’s hard to say. Big Disney movies usually have a 100-day theatrical window, but Searchlight is typically closer to 60 days.

Plus the Academy Awards will be a factor – with the Oscars handed out this Sunday (March 2, 2025), don’t be surprised to see A Complete Unknown making the most of that additional attention by being fast-tracked to streaming.

Plot of the Bob Dylan biopic explained

Bob Dylan on the streets of New York in A Complete Unknown.

Here’s the official synopsis for the movie: “Set in the influential New York music scene of the early ’60s, A Complete Unknown follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.”

The movie features Dylan writing some of his biggest hits, embarking on relationships with Joan Baez and Suze Rotolo (here called Sylvie Russo), and coming into conflict with friend and mentor Pete Seger when he plugs his guitar in, and from Pete’s point-of-view, utterly betrays the folk movement.
