There’s a reason Invincible fans think Machine Head sounds so familiar

Machine Head in Invincible Season 3 Episode 5

Invincible Season 3 Episode 5 just brought back Machine Head, the show’s part-robot crime boss – and if you think his voice actor sounds familiar, there’s a good reason.

Machine Head was one of the first antagonists Mark went up against in Invincible Season 1. It didn’t go well for him: thanks to a microchip that enabled him to predict the future, he enlisted the help of Battle Beast in advance of Invincible’s attack – and he nearly killed Mark.

Alas, even with the help of a motley crew of supervillains, he was still apprehended by the GDA, and Cecil removed his microchip. We catch up with him in Season 3 Episode 5, with Titan visiting him behind bars to ask for help with Mr Liu and the Order.

He has an extremely distinct voice; almost like if you mixed GLaDOS from Portal with Rex Splode. Once you find out who plays him in the Invincible cast, you’ll realize you’ve definitely seen him before.

Machine Head is voiced by Jeffrey Donavan in Invincible Season 3, reprising his role from the first season.

Donavan has been in loads of movies and TV shows. Notably, he played Michael Westen in Burn Notice, NBC’s hit spy series that ran from 2007 to 2013.

He also starred in Season 2 of Fargo in 2015, playing Dodd Gerhardt, before taking on the role of Charlie Haverford in Shut Eye. He’s also had smaller TV roles: he starred in Law & Order as Detective Frank Cosgrove, as well as appearing in CSI: Miami, Crossing Jordan, and The Beat.

Movie-wise, he starred in Sleepers, Hitch, J. Edgar, and both Sicario movies (let’s hope he returns if Sicario 3 ever gets made). He also appeared in one of the worst horror sequels ever made, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 – but hey, they can’t all be winners.

He’s earned Robert Kirkman’s praises, with the creator telling Collider: “I also have to throw out a shout-out to Jeffrey Donovan for Machine Head in Season 1.

“He is also another actor that came in and was like, ‘Nope, I’m gonna make this character 400 times better than you thought it could be,’ which is great.”
