Why you need to watch Netflix’s “gripping” Harlan Coben series Caught

Just three months after Missing You, another Harlan Coben adaptation has arrived on Netflix, and it’s another binge-worthy TV show to add to your watchlist.

Harlan Coben is a prolific author, having written 35 books and counting, all of which tell twisty mystery-thriller tales. In 2018, he signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to have a number of his novels adapted into TV shows, and it’s proved fruitful so far.

Kicking off with Safe in 2018, there have been 11 entries to Netflix’s Coben collection so far, with the streaming service dropping Missing You on New Year’s Day. But that’s far from the only release in store for 2025.

At the beginning of March, Just One Look landed on Netflix, and now Caught has arrived, promising even more twists and turns within its “gripping” storyline.

Caught marks a first for Harlan Coben Netflix collection

Based on Coben’s book of the same name, Caught is the first Latin American adaptation of his work. The new Netflix series is set and filmed in Argentina.

Much like the rest of the shows in his collection, it’s receiving mixed reviews (sometimes from the same source). As MT said, “Caught (or Atrapados in Spanish) might just be the best Harlan Coben adaptation on Netflix. Yet, it isn’t very good or appealing.”

Of the more favorable reviews, EscribiendoCine said, “Caught is a profound and well-executed thriller that manages to combine tension, social reflection, and character development in an outstanding way.”

FilmFrontLine added, “Dive into this gripping thriller, available in Spanish & English. Don’t miss the suspense, drama, and twists!”

On the other side of the scale, Digital Mafia Talkies wrote, “At this stage, it’s pointless to expect anything from Harlan Coben, his fans, and his Netflix adaptations. They are not going to improve. They’ll probably get worse.”

Ultimately, you just need to go into it expecting a Coben adaptation. Is it the best TV? Absolutely not. But will it serve up some easy entertainment for a few hours? Damn straight.

What is Caught about?

Caught is a six-episode series centering around Ema Garay, a journalist known for exposing criminals who have evaded the law.

She’s on the trail of her latest case, an online predator who preys on teenage girls through a popular gaming platform. Just as she closes in on the suspect, all signs point to Leo Mercer, a respected figure in the community.

As Ema and her team dig deeper into his movements, their investigation takes an unexpected turn when a 16-year-old violinist, who had been communicating with an unknown older man, suddenly vanishes.

In a conversation with Variety, Coben said he took a hands-off approach to the new TV show, saying he trusted the creators to adapt his work within the Argentine backdrop. However, he did want Villamil for the role of Ema.

“I did not feel the need to interfere all that much but I did really want Soledad Villamil for the lead from day one,” he told the outlet.

He also praised the location, which was switched over from New Jersey in the book to San Carlos de Bariloche in the series.

“Bariloche captures the same spirit and emotions evoked by the novel, even if the setting isn’t an exact match,” Coben continued.

“It organically becomes its own universe – a small city that isn’t quite a town but not a metropolis either. It’s the kind of place where everyone seems to know each other, yet strangers still cross paths without truly meeting.”
