We’re reached the end of blockbuster season, but there are lots of intriguing movies coming in September, including multiple horror films, and a new Paul Thomas Anderson.
Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White got 2025 off to a slow start in cinemas, but since then business has picked at the global box office.
Ne Zha 2 has been the unexpected story of the year, with the animated sequel becoming the fifth biggest film in history, while A Minecraft Movie got close to a billion dollars, and Lilo & Stitch has now surpassed that number.
But Hollywood will be hoping for some surprises in September, via a Stephen King adaptation, some horror sequels, and a film that sees Paul Thomas Anderson directing Leonardo DiCaprio.
The Conjuring: Last Rites

- Release date: September 5, 2025
- Cast: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Mia Tomlinson
What it’s about: Ed and Lorraine Warren confront their final and most harrowing case: the real-life Smurl haunting in Pennsylvania. With psychic daughter Judy in tow, the family must face a malevolent force that threatens both their faith and their legacy.
Why we’re excited: The Conjuring movies always deliver scares, so that’s one reason to get excited for Last Rites. As the title suggests, this is also likely to be the last of The Conjuring movies – at least those featuring Ed and Lorraine – so we’re also intrigued to see how their swan-song plays out. Especially as early word suggests it brings their story full circle.
The Long Walk

- Release date: September 12, 2025
- Cast: Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Mark Hamill
What it’s about: In a dystopian United States, 100 teenage boys compete in a walking contest “designed to inspire everyday people.” The only catch is if they fall below three miles an hour, they are executed, meaning one wins, and the rest die.
Why we’re excited: The Long Walk is one of Stephen King’s earliest novels, and while many have tried to adapt the story – which confidently predicted the hell-scape of reality TV – this is the first time the book has made it to the big screen. It’s also one for fans of the similarly themed Hungar Games movies, and The Long Walk is even directed by Francis Lawrence, who helmed five of those films.

Him

- Release date: September 19, 2025
- Cast: Tyriq Wither, Marlon Wayans, Julia Fox
What it’s about: Rising quarterback Cameron Cade suffers career-threatening injuries after a brutal attack. Offered support and rehab by idol Isaiah White, Cade enters a secluded training compound where fame, ambition, violence, and horror blur into a waking nightmare.
Why we’re excited: Jordan Peele is the main reason to be excited about this one, though the comedian-turned-horror icon is on producing duties for Him, with TV helmer Justin Tipping directing, and Marlon Wayans playing against type as the sinister sporting icon who may or may not have an ulterior motive.
One Battle After Another

- Release date: September 26, 2025
- Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn
What it’s about: A group of former revolutionaries who were members of a vigilante group called the French 75 are forced to reunite when a former enemy comes after them.
Why we’re excited: Paul Thomas Anderson is writing and directing this one, which is reason enough to watch, but the sublime cast also pits three acting heavyweights against each other in the shape of Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, and Sean Penn.
The Strangers Chapter 2

- Release date: September 26, 2025
- Cast: Madelaine Petsch, Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath
What it’s about: When the Strangers realise that one of their supposed victims – Maya – survived the events of the first film, they hunt her down in typically sadistic fashion.
Why we’re excited: The rebooted Stranger-verse returns, and the reason to watch is to see exactly how Renny Harlin has turned the slim premise of the original into a self-contained trilogy, and to watch Madelaine Petsch’s transformation into a bona fide scream queen.
