Open AI boss jokes about Studio Ghibli AI “slop”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has responded to ChatGPT users creating a Studio Ghibli-style AI image of him looking like “a twink.”

OpenAI has launched a new image generator on ChatGPT, and people have been using it to create Studio Ghibli-style pictures.

That probably won’t go down well with Ghibli mastermind Hayao Miyazaki, who previously savaged AI animation, saying in 2016: “I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”

But OpenAI boss Sam Altman is loving what’s happening, calling “one man’s slop another man’s treasure.”

The Studio Ghibli-style pictures that have been all over social media for the past few days have upset those steadfastly against the proliferation of AI art, but Sam Altman is seeing the funny side of the success, posting on social media:

> be me
> grind for a decade trying to help make superintelligence to cure cancer or whatever
> mostly no one cares for first 7.5 years, then for 2.5 years everyone hates you for everything
> wake up one day to hundreds of messages: ‘look i made you into a twink ghibli style’ haha

He also changed his profile picture on Twitter/X to one of those Studio Ghibli portraits, as can be seen in the above image.

But it’s not been smooth sailing for ChatGPT, with Altman adding that the company’s graphics processing units are struggling.

“It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT,” writes Altman. “But our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rare limits while we are working on making it more efficient. Hopefully won’t be long.”

Altman adds: “Also, we are refusing some generations that should be allowed; we are fixing these as fast as we can.”
