Pop the Balloon is officially heading to Netflix with a new twist

Still from the Pop the Balloon dating web series

Pop the Balloon has proven its viral credentials and is now making the move to Netflix – but there’s a twist that is bound to make the show even more entertaining.

Unless you live off-grid, chances are you’ve seen a Pop the Balloon video at some point. If you’re still unfamiliar, it’s a dating series that originated on YouTube and was created by Arlette Amuli and Bolia “BM” Matundu.

The aim of the game is simple: an eligible bachelor or bachelorette stands before a group of potential partners, who are each holding a red balloon and a pin. As the central figure shares details about themselves and their preferences, any participant who feels uninterested can opt out by popping their balloon.

The process continues until only one balloon remains, leading to a potential match. With so many clips from the TV show going viral on YouTube and TikTok, it was only a matter of time before Netflix stepped in.

Pop the Balloon is coming to Netflix live

Not only has the streaming giant picked up the show, but it will also broadcast its version of Pop the Balloon live, bringing a new level of unpredictability as we watch it unfold in real time.

And that’s not all. As well as the regular contestants, the new TV show will introduce some reality and social media stars, including Johnny Bananas, Chase DeMoor, Farrah Abraham, and Zaina Sesay.

Meanwhile, Insecure star Yvonne Orji is set to host, and BM and Amuli are serving as executive producers alongside Matt Sharp, who said, “We couldn’t be more excited to expand and reimagine Pop the Balloon on Netflix.

“This new iteration builds on the original’s core concept while pushing the boundaries of connection, chemistry, and unpredictability.”

Matundu and Amuli added, “We’re thrilled to see Pop the Balloon take on a new life on Netflix. From day one, we’ve kept love and fun at the heart of the show, and watching it evolve and soar beyond our wildest dreams has been truly exciting.”

Orji told Netflix, “After playing the ‘unlucky in love’ Molly Carter for five seasons on Insecure, I know a thing or two about looking for love in a hopeless place.

“Hopefully the singles on Pop the Balloon Live will have much more success. As host, I’m looking forward to striking that delicate balance of heart and humor for our daters and the Netflix audience at home.”

If you can’t wait to give it a go, you don’t have long to wait. The Netflix version of Pop the Balloon will stream live every Thursday night at 8pm ET / 5pm PT starting April 10.
