Reacher Season 3 is about to start streaming on Prime Video, making now a good time for a heads up about what the writers have changed from the book.
Each season of Reacher is based on a different novel by Lee Child, and being a fresh format, makers of the show have to decide what to keep and what to change from the source material.
Season 1 was adapted from Killing Floor, Season 2 was based on Bad Luck and Trouble, and Season 3 is an adaptation of Persuader.
But while the central story is the same, with Reacher going undercover at a shady import/export business, one element is very different, and concerns a character from Jack Reacher’s past.
Frances Neagley plays an important role in Reacher Season 3

Frances Neagley first appeared in the 2002 Jack Reacher novel Without Fail. A Master Sergeant in Reacher’s 110th Special Investigations Unit, she was also the closest thing Jack had to an actual friend.
As played by Maria Sten, Neagley made her television debut in Season 2 of Reacher, taking a break from her day job in corporate security to help Jack take down the man killing their former teammates.
Season 3 of the series is based on the aforementioned Persuader, in which Neagley doesn’t appear. However, for the TV adaptation, they’ve added Frances to the mix, with Neagley assisting Reacher’s efforts to infiltrate businessman Zachary Beck’s criminal operation.
It’s a major change, but one that makes sense when you realise Amazon wants to keep the character front-and-center in advance of a Neagley spinoff that was announced in October and is already shooting.

Here’s the official synopsis for the forthcoming show: “When she learns that a beloved friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident, she becomes hell-bent on justice. Using everything she’s learned from Jack Reacher and her time as a member of the 110 Special Investigators, Neagley puts herself on a dangerous path to uncover a menacing evil.”
Unlike the Reacher seasons – which are each based on a Lee Child novel – the Neagley series will be all-new stories, with Sten telling Men’s Journal: “We don’t have source material for Neagley. What we’re doing is brand new and original.”
