Invincible Season 3 Episode 7 is incredibly emotional – especially for fans of Rex Splode. However, while it may happen one day, don’t expect to see a special dedicated to him soon.
After the success of Invincible’s first season, Amazon green-lit Invincible Presents: Atom Eve, a prequel exploring the character’s extraordinary (and shocking) origin story long before she meets Mark Grayson in the main series.
While Kirkman has called the TV show a “second draft” of the story, the special was directly based on Atom Eve’s comics bundled in the Invincible Universe Compendium… alongside a team-up with Rex.
A Rex Splode special has been at the top of fans’ wish lists (as well as Conquest) for years now, and while it’s not beyond the realm of possibility, there’s a simple reason it’s not a priority.
Robert Kirkman addresses demand for Invincible Rex Splode special

Speaking to Dexerto before Episode 7’s release, Robert Kirkman said he’d “really love” to do a Rex Splode special at some point – however, they need to stay focused on Invincible’s annual release schedule right now.
“Yeah… the story is definitely there. Comic fans know and it’s something that we’d really love to do,” he said.
“I think right now we’re just really focused on keeping the show moving forward, making sure that we’ve got enough episodes done to keep the show coming out at a regular clip. But, hopefully at some point, we’ll have time for some distractions and some interludes and we’ll get to do some cool stuff.”

There’ll definitely be even more demand for a Rex Splode special after Episode 7 (no spoilers), as well as spinoffs around other characters like Brit and Tech Jacket, who appear to defend Earth during the Invincible War.
That said, after the long wait for Season 2 and the backlash to its Part 1/Part 2 split, it makes sense that Kirkman is trying to maintain one full season per year going forward.
“It’s a very long and evolved process and I think everybody working on the show is streamlining the processes and getting a little more efficient with everything that’s happening as we learn more of what the show needs,” Kirkman added.
“We started a long time ago on Season 2 and we’ve just kind of been working continuously since then, and we didn’t have a pandemic that blew everything up. That’s kind of why we’re looking like there’s not going to be a large gap like there was in the past.”
