If you loved Severance Season 2 Episode 7, you need to watch this terrifying Netflix special

Gemma in Severance and still from Black Mirror White Christmas

Severance Season 2 Episode 7 is, as the Martin Scorsese meme would say, “Absolute cinema.” If it’s left you thirsting for more, there’s a TV special you can watch on Netflix right now. Warning: spoilers ahead!

The latest chapter of the Apple TV+ series gives us more insight into Lumon’s goal than ever before, with Gemma being forced to endure a series of rooms named after Mark’s MDR files. Each room activates a different Innie, and each Innie is forced to live in perpetual suffering, stemming from one of Gemma’s fears.

In Wellington, for example, her life is just a bad day at the dentist’s. In Allentown, her Innie is in a never-ending loop of writing thank you notes. But we also get flashbacks of Mark and Gemma’s life together, making Severance Season 2 Episode 7 a romance, sci-fi, tragedy, horror, and thriller all rolled into one.

As said by one Redditor, “Ok well if anyone happens to know any shows/movies/books/anything that feel like THAT episode, let a girl know. I simply must have more.” Don’t fret, we’ve got you covered.

Black Mirror special is Severance’s twisted cousin

Although the parallels between Black Mirror and Severance are clear to see, one episode of the Charlie Brooke anthology series you may have overlooked is the 74-minute special, ‘White Christmas’.

Still from Black Mirror White Christmas

The Black Mirror episode, which dropped in 2014, was an addition to Season 2, before the series made its way to Netflix. It deals with many of the same horrifying concepts, as the storyline follows digital clones known as “cookies.”

Much like Severance’s Innies, they are forced to work, in this case as a personal assistant for the individual their consciousness is copied from.

The technology is used for other purposes, too, and it leaves the cookies trapped in a perpetual time loop, in the same way Gemma’s various Innies are made to endure.

All of this culminates in one of the most existentially horrifying twists in TV history (which we won’t spoil here, just in case you haven’t watched it yet).

Funnily enough, ‘White Christmas’ is a result of a deal between the Black Mirror creators and Channel 4, the original home of the TV show. After the network rejected Season 3, they commissioned a one-off special.

Thankfully, Netflix swooped in and saved the show, meaning all episodes – including the ‘White Christmas’ special – are available to watch on the streaming service.

So, if you need more of the same before the next Severance episode drops, you know what to do.
