Snow White live-action remake: Release date, trailer, cast & more

Snow White live-action

The live-action Snow White movie starring Rachel Zegler is dancing towards its premiere date, so let’s break down everything we know including release date and more.

As of late, Disney has been re-imagining many of its most famous animated movies and transferring them into the live-action world. We’ve already had Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid. Snow White is the next princess to get the live-action treatment.

When the original first came out in 1937 – as the first feature-length animated film – it became a massive hit and is now one of the most beloved animated movies ever. So naturally, the live-action remake has a lot to live up to.

So, here’s everything we know about the new movie, including the release date, plot, cast, and more.

Release date

The Snow White live-action remake will be released on March 21, 2025.

Unlike many recent Disney live-action remakes, Snow White will be released exclusively in cinemas before later being available on streaming.

Walt Disney Pictures first announced plans for a live-action remake of Snow White in October 2016. Over six years later, filming took place in the UK from March to July 2022.

Cast

Like all Disney live-action adaptations before it, Snow White’s cast includes some big-name actors, such as Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. The main cast for the live-action Snow White is as follows:

  • Rachel Zegler as Snow White
  • Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen
  • Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman
  • Andrew Burnap as Jonathan
  • Martin Klebba as Grumpy
  • Colin Michael Carmichael and Dujonna Gift as dwarves
  • Colin Michael Carmichael as Farno
  • Dujonna Gift as Maple

Zegler has discussed getting the role in Variety’s Actors on Actors series, stating: “Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me.”

As for behind the camera, the movie will be directed by Marc Webb, best known for helming The Amazing Spider-Man series. The screenplay comes from Greta Gerwig, of Barbie fame, along with Erin Cressida Wilson.

Marc Platt and Russel Allen will produce the film, alongside executive producer Callum McDougall. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have written the new original songs for Snow White, just like they did for Aladdin.

Plot

Snow White live-action
The live-action Snow White will be different to the classic animated film.

Snow White will be a remake of the classic Disney animated tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Because of this, we can expect many similar plot points to the 1937 film and the original 1812 Brothers Grimm fairy tale. This includes a kind Princess, a jealous beauty-obsessed Queen, and some dwarves.

However, like many of the other live-action Disney remakes, this one will be slightly updated for modern times. For example, the live-action will feature a brand new love interest for the titular Princess named Jonathan, an aspect that is likely to change up the story in a big way.

In an interview with Variety, Zegler also revealed that the new adaptation of Snow White will change the origins of the character’s name completely and take inspiration from earlier stories of the heroine.

“It fell back to another version of ‘Snow White’ that was told in history, where she survived a snowstorm that occurred when she was a baby. And so the king and queen decided to name her Snow White to remind her of her resilience. One of the core points in our film for any young woman or young person is remembering how strong you actually are.”

The names of some of the Dwarves have been changed and renamed as miners and what’s more, new original songs, including Waiting on a Wish, have been added to the soundtrack, along with the classic tunes from the original animated film.

Trailers

A full Snow White trailer was released on December 3, 2024, and you can watch it for yourself below:

The live-action remake certainly looks like a switch-up from the original, with the new movie appearing to be an adventure set equally between the kingdom and the enchanted forest. It also looks as though Snow White has a deeper connection to the Evil Queen, with the two sparring one-on-one throughout.

Disney also released a small teaser trailer for Snow White at D23 event.

The trailer showed fans the CGI dwarves, Gal Gadot as the villainous queen, and Zegler singing Snow White’s most iconic song.

On February 16, 2025, Disney also dropped another teaser for the film; this one-minute showcase included even more singing, action, and a better look at the visuals.
