Spider-Man: Brand New Day filming paused after Tom Holland suffers injury

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been all over the headlines since filming began in Scotland last month, but now it’s in the news for a different reason: Peter Parker star Tom Holland has suffered an injury on set.

Of all the upcoming Marvel movies, the fourth Spider-Man entry is the most hyped. After years of multiversal chaos, Brand New Day is set to give us what we want: a street-level adventure for Spidey.

What’s more, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is set to make his MCU movie debut, and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk is also joining the cast. Holland even did lots of “sneaky research online” to find out exactly what the fans want, suggesting Brand New Day will be an all-timer.

Production began in Glasgow in early August, with plenty of new photos and videos building anticipation further. However, filming has now been brought to a halt due to an incident that took place on Friday (September 19).

Tom Holland suffers injury on set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Tom Holland was rushed to the hospital on Friday after a stunt on the set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day went wrong, with The Sun reporting that it’s believed he cracked his head from a fall and was treated for a concussion.

The incident unfolded at Leavesden Studios in Watford, UK, and though Holland didn’t suffer from any serious injuries, filming has been put on pause for the time being.

The outlet reported that the Spider-Man star attended a charity event in London over the weekend with Zendaya and his father, Dominic Holland. However, he left early after feeling ill, with his dad confirming Holland would be away from shooting “for a while”.

Sources close to the production of the Marvel movie have since told Deadline that the actor will take a break “out of precaution” but is expected to return to filming in a few days.

It was suggested that a woman, thought to be a stunt double, was also taken to hospital after the incident, but the sources said Holland was the only person affected. A meeting is due to take place today (September 22) to adjust filming plans.

According to the Basingstoke Gazette, parts of the town will be closed on September 23, 25, 29, and October 6, 7, and 8 for filming – believed to be for Spider-Man: Brand New Day – although it’s not confirmed whether Holland will return on these dates.

Does Tom Holland do his own stunts?

Tom Holland as Spider-Man

While Holland has a dedicated stunt team, he’s known for throwing himself into the action whenever possible. With his gymnastics background, he’s been able to perform flips, wall runs, and fight sequences himself.

In Spider-Man: Homecoming, for instance, he leaped off a replica of the Washington Monument himself and performed the iconic webswinging sequence with Zendaya. Still, when it comes to more dangerous stunts, Marvel typically relies on doubles to minimize risk.

Holland takes pride in being able to perform some of the stunts himself, but this latest incident has sparked debate among Spider-Man fans. Taking to Reddit, one wrote, “Man, hope he’s ok. I am sure he’s prideful to do a lot of his own stunts, but quick recovery.”

Another said, “Honestly, this is why I think actors shouldn’t do their own stunts. Should leave it to the trained professional stunt men.”

But a third added, “We don’t even know what the stunt was. It could have been something simple that just went wrong. He’s injured himself on half of his sets. His doubles have been doing the major stunts we’ve seen.”

“This is why I’m torn on actors doing their own stunts. On the one hand, it seriously takes me out of the scene when directors have to cover for actors not doing any action scenes with constant cuts to hide faces and shaky cams,” wrote a fourth.

“On the other hand, it does suck for a production to come to a screeching halt when a main actor gets injured. There should be a nice middle ground.”
