James Gunn has confirmed when Superman will be coming to HBO Max, following David Corenswet’s leak with his “best Eve Teschmacher impression.”
Despite what DCEU loyalists may argue online, Superman was a success: it made over $615 million worldwide, it was well-liked by critics and fans, and it paved the way for Gunn’s DCU to continue with Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface next year.
It dropped early on digital, but that wasn’t because it underperformed in theaters. As explained by Gunn, it was to allow as many people to watch it before the premiere of Peacemaker Season 2, which is a direct follow-up to the film.
Now, despite earlier predictions about when it’d drop on streaming, Gunn has revealed when Superman will drop on HBO Max. Except… Corenswet did it first.
Superman gets HBO Max streaming date
Superman will be available to stream on HBO Max this Friday, September 19. That’s just over a month after its digital release on August 15.
Gunn confirmed the date on Threads, but only after Corenswet posted a selfie with Superman’s streaming screen on the platform behind him.

“Doing my best Eve Teschmacher impression,” he wrote, a nod to how Sara Sampaio’s character shared pivotal information about Lex Luthor with Jimmy Olsen via selfies and other sneaky photos.
As for why it’s dropping so early, it could be connected to Peacemaker again. Episode 5 airs this week, which is the last of the episodes critics were allowed to see in advance.
Gunn has been so secretive about Episodes 6-8 that he hasn’t allowed his publicist to see them, and with rumors of a Superman and/or Lex cameo, this would give even more fans the chance to revisit the movie.
