Superman test footage details leak, and there’s good and bad news

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s yet more rumors about James Gunn’s Superman and the supposed test screenings that have been taking place over the last few days.

Yes, some lucky souls reportedly got a sneak peek at an early cut of the first DCU movie, and some details have started circulating on r/DCUleaks.

Of course, before we get into things, there are two important things we need to address. The first is that (as shocking as this will be to read) people lie on the internet, and none of these details have been confirmed, so take these reports with enough salt to knock out a Kryptonian.

Our second point: If spoilers are your Kryptonite, you will want to stop reading now. We’re about to lift the lead shielding on these bad boys.

The great news

David Corenswet's slick Superman.

Ok, let’s start with the good. If you’ve been worried about how James Gunn’s typically irreverent tone will mesh with Superman’s earnestness, we’re apparently in safe hands. According to the Reddit source: “The film wasn’t a comedy, but did have funny moments in it.”

Similarly, if you’re concerned about the number of characters slated to appear, then we’re in good hands. The cameos don’t feel gratuitous, nor do they overshadow Lois and Clark’s story.

“While Rick Flagg Sr. is in the film, and he plays a rather short role, there were no nods to Creature Commandos that [their source] noticed,” the source wrote. “[Their source also] said that it had a lot of characters but didn’t feel like they took away from the main plot.”

Best of all, this mystery movie watcher is supposedly not a huge fan of DC or Marvel movies. However, they still enjoyed the film, which suggests it’s not fallen into the trap other superhero movies have in recent years of being too focused on the megafans. Instead, it will serve as a more accessible introduction to the DCU.

Finally, the cast is reportedly good to great. Rachel Brosnahan supposedly steals every scene she’s in, while Nicholas Hoult nails the wrathful side of Lex Luthor (even if the source claims he overacts a little).

The less good news

Sadly, the Man of Tomorrow wasn’t quite as bulletproof as we’d hoped. The source claimed some of the special effects looked a little rough, and the VFX were a bit goofy in places. Honestly, though, if this is a rough cut, it’s likely the special effects simply weren’t finished, and they’ll be brought up to modern standards as we get closer to release.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the next point. According to the leak, “Krypto plays an important role, but [he] felt a little tacked in. That part felt artificial.” As a Krypto fan, I’m choosing to ignore this, but I won’t lie — it doesn’t sound great.

If you want to read the full report, click here as there are a few other titbits, including the fact that the preview didn’t have a post-credit scene, although they admit that could change when the movie is finished. Of course, we’ll have to wait for the film’s release (or another trailer) to see how accurate these rumors are.
