Taylor Sheridan shows may be at risk as Paramount plans big streaming shakeup

The future was looking bright for Taylor Sheridan’s small screen universe, but changes over at Paramount Plus might be threatening his developing projects.

The end of 2024 proved to be a stellar time for Sheridan fans. The return of Lioness Season 2 and Yellowstone hit the airwaves, and Landman became a smash success, overpowering the likes of even Squid Game Season 2 in the streaming charts.

Over the years, Sheridan has created seven different shows for the network: Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness, and Landman. But all that success comes with a hefty price tag: a reported $500 million per year, in fact.

And if new reports are to be believed, Paramount may be putting the brakes on Sheridan’s ongoing spending.

Paramount may be cutting Taylor Sheridan’s budget

A new report by Puck claims that Paramount’s merger with Skydance Media may have a massive impact on upcoming shows. David Ellison and new streaming head Cindy Holland are reportedly looking to put a budget of around $9 million per new episode of shows for the streamer.

This poses a big problem for Sheridan, whose shows typically cost around $12-16 million per episode. (The first season of 1923, eight episodes, allegedly cost around $200 million, which makes it one of the most expensive TV shows ever made.)

The reason for the expensive budgets is fairly simple. Sheridan’s shows often cast A-list stars, including Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, and Billy Bob Thornton.

What’s more, they’re typically shot in premium locations like Montana, rather than shooting in other states or countries to cut back on production costs.

Sheridan’s contract with Paramount reportedly runs for another two years, and in that time the Yellowstone creator has several other shows in the works: Landman Season 2, 1944, The Madison, and a rumored Beth and Rip spinoff.

The report also claims Sheridan is unhappy with the upcoming cost cutting, and may indicate that he moves his creative endeavours to another network if renegotiations can’t be made.
