The Handmaid’s Tale sequel series gets exciting update ahead of Season 6

Aunt Lydia and June in The Handmaid's Tale

Blessed be the fruit! The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 is nearly here, and even though it’s the last chapter, a sequel show is in the works – and it just got an exciting update from Hulu

There’s a lot to wrap up in the sixth and final season of the MGM and Hulu show. What’s going to happen to Nick? Will The Wheelers find Serena? And how will the Handmaid revolution go down?

Thankfully, there’s not long to wait to find out, with the first three episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 dropping on Hulu on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

With eight long years on our screens, it may be hard to say goodbye to the hit TV show. But now you won’t have to.

The Testaments to start filming before The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 premiere

This week, Hulu confirmed that The Handmaid’s Tale sequel series The Testaments will begin filming on April 7, and Ann Dowd will be returning as Aunt Lydia.

Much like the flagship series, The Testaments is based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, which itself is a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale.

Set 15 years after the events of the original story, The Testaments follows three women: Aunt Lydia; Agnes, a young woman raised in Gilead; and Daisy, a teenager in Canada who learns shocking secrets about her past.

Alongside Dowd, Chase Infiniti will be playing Agnes, the given name of June’s daughter Hannah in The Handmaid’s Tale. Meanwhile, Lucy Halliday takes on the role of Daisy, who also has a connection to June (no spoilers here).

As well as Dowd’s return, Elisabeth Moss will be serving as an executive producer of the new TV show, while creator Bruce Miller is on showrunning duties.

The streaming service shared a photo of the table read on social media, writing, “It’s official! The Testaments, based on Margaret Atwood’s sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, starts production April 7.

“Ann Dowd will reprise her role as Aunt Lydia with Elisabeth Moss as an executive producer of the series. Follow @TestamentsHulu for more.”

There’s no release date just yet, but given they’re beginning filming next week, we can expect more information very soon.

Until then, the news has sparked plenty of excitement, with one writing, “Wonderful news! Very excited to see what comes next.”

“Give us Nick and June resistance era! They’re mentioned in the book,” said another, while a third added, “Cannot wait.”

A fourth chimed in, “Still remember how thrilled I was reading The Testaments imagining how freaking epic it would be when Lizzie appeared out of nowhere as a guest star. It just HAS to happen.”
