The Neighborhood’s second planned spinoff for Malcolm and Marty has officially been canceled by CBS, but its not all bad news before the year closes out.
You might remember that both the Butler and Johnson family helped Malcolm get on his feet in Venice Beach in order to kickstart his career as a writer. Initially, this was in order to franchise The Neighborhood in the same style as The Big Bang Theory, with Malcolm and Marty taking center stage as their own lives develop.
This all takes place in the Season 7 finale, acting as a segue straight from one to the other. But the new TV show has hit the ultimate stumbling block – CBS has decided to cancel the spinoff altogether.
There’s no official reason why, but if you’ve been paying attention, there’s already good news that means the setup won’t go to waste.
The Neighborhood spinoff won’t happen, but Season 8 is coming
Sure, The Neighborhood’s spinoff isn’t happening. But there is good news – The Neighborhood Season 8 is coming later this year.

More importantly, this means the events of the Season 7 finale won’t be glossed over. This has been confirmed by actor Cedric The Entertainer, who told TV Line, “The spin-off didn’t happen, and that was really unfortunate. But I think it’ll ring true and it’ll still work. Those guys are very much still regulars for Season 8. So, I think it’s going to be an opportunity for us to do a number of things.
“One is that as we are going into the finale of the show, I think it’s going to be important to show that Malcolm is moving on. He’s doing his own thing. Marty will eventually probably do something similar, and we are just showing the growth.

“Like we don’t know exactly where our show’s going to go, but for me, a good series finale always kind of gives you something to inspire for that may or may not happen, but ultimately, all your heroes have a hero’s ending,” he continued. “They have their end in a way that you’re satisfied and you’re happy, and you even imagine what their new life will be like beyond The Neighborhood or whatever.

“It’s really early on. The guys are getting back in the writers’ room in June, and so until then, we are just kind of toying and playing with concepts and messing around until it becomes very clear where we’re going to head.”
Confirmed in March 2025, we’re expecting The Neighborhood Season 8 to begin airing in either September or October 2026. Even if the release date is later than previous seasons, it will be in the 2025-2026 CBS slate.
“The brilliant cast and creative team at The Neighborhood, led by the incomparable Cedric the Entertainer, have brought levity, laughter, and poignant storylines to Monday nights for seven incredible seasons,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment.
She continued, “We believe the show’s loyal fans deserve a proper farewell season full of the trademark humor and heartfelt moments that are synonymous with the series.” One spinoff, Crutch, is reportedly still in the works with Paramount+.
