Why you need to watch new Netflix murder mystery series The Residence

The detective and suspects in The Residence.

The Residence is a new Netflix series from the Shondaland team that’s set in the White House – here’s why you should watch the whodunnit.

It’s still early in 2025, but we’ve already had a Presidential murder-mystery in the shape of Paradise on Hulu.

But where that was a serious thriller with an unexpected sci-fi twist, The Residence a bingeable show that’s very different, being a light-hearted romp in the style of Knives Out or Clue.

All eights episodes are now streaming on Netflix, and below you’ll find multiple reasons for why you should check it out.

It’s a star-studded, genre-bending Shondaland show

Firstly, the show is made by Shondaland, the production company founded and run by Shonda Rhimes, and that pretty much guarantees quality.

Previous Shondaland shows include Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder, and Bridgerton, which are some of the most popular and beloved series of the last two decades.

The Residence combines genres in a way that’s new for the company, however, being a murder-mystery thriller that’s also a broad screwball comedy.

Plus, the cast is filled with great actors – you can read the full list below, but some of our favorites include Uzo Aduba, Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Lee, Randall Park, Bronson Pinchot, Jane Curtin, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and as herself, Kyle Minogue.
