What “scared” Thunderbolts’ Sentry star most as Marvel’s most powerful superhero

The Sentry in the Marvel Comics and Lewis Pullman as Bob Reynolds in Thunderbolts

Dexerto caught up with Lewis Pullman ahead of the release of Thunderbolts, who revealed he felt the pressure taking on Robert “Bob” Reynolds, aka the Sentry. It’s not surprising, given he’s considered by many to be the most powerful Marvel superhero.

Thunderbolts is just around the corner, and already it’s proven itself with the critics, us included. Dexerto gave the upcoming MCU movie four stars, saying it’s the “closest Marvel has come to recapturing the grounded, character-first storytelling of its earliest phase.”

Our leading team of antiheroes – Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and Red Guardian (David Harbour) – must fight a terrifying threat while tackling their own inner demons.

This paves the way for the introduction of a Marvel Comics icon: the Sentry, a hero with the power of “a million exploding suns” and a dark alter ego known as the Void. It’s surprising the MCU has sat on this cape-wearer for so long, but that’s all set to change with Thunderbolts.

Lewis Pullman “scared” to take on Sentry in Thunderbolts

For Pullman, who was tasked with stepping into such a huge role, it was a pretty big moment. “I was very scared,” he told us. “I think, you know, it’s a hard role for me, and a hard world to kind of figure out how I fit into it and what I had to offer.

“And so, trying to find my way in with him and stay there, however uncomfortable it was, was a challenge but it was also very illuminating… by exploring him and exploring all the themes that we go through in this.”

Pullman went on to highlight his co-star Hannah John-Kamen’s comments on the Thunderbolts coming together and being a team. “It’s almost despite all of their great efforts to not be a team, it’s undeniable that everything is sinking into this perfect puzzle piece,” he added.

If you’re a fan of the Marvel comics, you’ll know who Bob Reynolds is. First introduced in Sentry #1 (2000), he has godlike powers, including flight, super strength, and near invulnerability.

The Sentry in the Marvel Comics

Sentry stands as one of Marvel’s most powerful beings, but his greatest enemy isn’t the villains he faces – it’s his dark side. The Void represents the destructive aspect of Reynolds’ psyche, and it’s a constant threat to his life and the world around him, making his story one of tragic heroism.

The MCU’s adaptation of Sentry in Thunderbolts is expected to focus more on the psychological aspect of Reynolds’ character, highlighting his internal battle with the Void. His struggles mirror the Thunderbolts themselves, a group of misfits who are facing their own personal demons.

Thunderbolts hits UK cinemas on May 1 and US cinemas on May 2. You can also check out our ranking of the MCU’s movies and everything we know about Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
