Get yourself comfy: whether you’re signed up to Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, or another platform, September 2025 has plenty to watch on television.
You’ll be spoiled for choice this coming month, no matter what streaming service you choose, with series like The Paper and Gen V Season 2 airing over the next few weeks.
Considering the new movies hitting cinemas too, if you have any big plans for September, I’d advise you to cancel them.
Best new TV shows out in September 2025 – where to stream them
The Paper

- Genre: Comedy
- Release date: September 4
- Cast: Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Nuñez, Tim Key, Chelsea Frei
- Where to stream: Peacock
- How long is it? 10 episodes
What it’s about: More than 10 years after The Office, the documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin and its beloved staff have found a new subject: the Toledo Truth Teller, a long-running (and abysmal) Midwestern newspaper that’s just hired a new editor-in-chief, and he has big plans to restore it to its former glory.
What we like about it: You’re right to feel skeptical, if not worried, about The Paper. After all, how can it possibly live up to its predecessor, which has slowly become one of the most iconic TV shows of the 21st century?
There are three things you should consider. Firstly, Greg Daniels (who adapted Ricky Gervais’ The Office for the US) is back. Secondly, it has one piece of connective tissue to the original series: Oscar Martinez. Thirdly, the cast is fantastic. In other words, it should work. We may have left the good old days, but The Paper could be a chance to like something new.
Task

- Genre: Crime drama
- Release date: September 7
- Cast: Mark Ruffalo, Emilia Jones, Alison Oliver
- Where to stream: HBO/HBO Max
- How long is it? 7 episodes
What it’s about: Set in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, a former Priest who is now an FBI agent heads a Task Force to put an end to a string of violent robberies led by an unsuspecting family man.

What we like about it: Sunday night on HBO is prime time TV. It’s a spot on the schedule reserved for the greats, like Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, and The White Lotus.
That’s why you should be excited about Task, a new crime drama from Brad Ingelsby, the man behind the brilliant Mare of Easttown. Expect high-stakes, emotional, and dark viewing.
“It’s exploring my own anxieties or fears in life,” Inglesby told The Academy. “My uncle left the priesthood, so I’m always curious and chatting with him about how his view of God has changed and why he left. Growing up Catholic, I’ve always been very interested in these questions about God and suffering. I think the fun of it is in asking the questions.”
The Girlfriend

- Genre: Thriller
- Release date: September 10
- Cast: Robin Wright, Laurie Davidson, Olivia Cooke
- Where to stream: Prime Video
- How long is it? 6 episodes
What it’s about: Laura has it all: a glittering career, a caring husband, and her beloved son, Daniel. Her perfect life begins to unravel when Daniel brings home Cherry, a girlfriend who changes everything. After a tense introduction, Laura becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something. Is she a manipulative social climber, or is Laura just paranoid? The truth is a matter of perspective.
What we like about it: Once upon a time (the ’90s), The Girlfriend would have been a steamy, theatrical smash-hit. Things have changed, but on this occasion, it’s for the better: we’ll get to see the deliciously fraught dynamic between Wright and Cooke unravel over six nail-biting, twisty episodes.
For a taste of what to expect, here’s what Wright told The Guardian: “We’re in so much competition now with content. How racy everything is, how much shock value it has. We had to up the ante and have the mother kiss the son, which is so f*cked up, so weird. And yet, it happens.”
Gen V Season 2

- Genre: Superhero
- Release date: September 17
- Cast: Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann
- Where to stream: Prime Video
- How long is it? 8 episodes
What it’s about: As the rest of America adjusts to Homelander’s iron fist, back at Godolkin University, the mysterious new Dean preaches a curriculum that promises to make students more powerful than ever. Cate and Sam are celebrated heroes, while Marie, Jordan, and Emma reluctantly return to college, burdened by months of trauma and loss.
What we like about it: As The Boys barrels towards its highly anticipated ending next year, Gen V Season 2 isn’t just something to plug the gap: in the words of creator Eric Kripke, it “really helps set up the climax of this final confrontation in The Boys.”
The last season ended on an unsettling note: after taking a laser blast from Homelander, Marie and co. woke up in a facility with no windows or doors. Somehow, they’ll end up back at Godolkin in Season 2, and according to the synopsis, they’ll discover a “secret program that goes back to the founding of Godolkin University that may have larger implications than they realize.”
Expect a couple of guest stars from the main series to pop up, too. Things are going to get diabolical.
Black Rabbit

- Genre: Thriller
- Release date: September 18
- Cast: Jude Law, Jason Bateman, Amaka Okafor, Cleopatra Coleman
- Where to stream: Netflix
- How long is it? 8 episodes
What it’s about: Set against the backdrop of New York City’s high-pressure nightlife scene, the series follows Jake Friedken, the charismatic owner of Black Rabbit, and his brother Vince, who returns to the business unexpectedly – and trouble soon follows.
What we like about it: Ozark deserves the same reverence as Breaking Bad: a genuine week-to-week nail-biter with a career-defining, against-type performance from Jason Bateman. If you’re a fan still looking for something to scratch the same itch, get ready for Black Rabbit.
Not only do Bateman and his former co-star Laura Linney direct multiple episodes, but the star said he thinks it’s the “best thing” he’s ever made.
“It’s really, really well done if I do say so just because there’s so many great people involved with this thing, and I’m super proud of it. I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever done and I’m just really excited for it to come out, really, really excited,” he told Nicolle Wallace.
House of Guinness

- Genre: Drama
- Release date: September 25
- Cast: Louis Partridge, Anthony Boyle, Emily Fairn, Fionn O’Shea, David Wilmot, James Norton, Jack Gleeson
- Where to stream: Netflix
- How long is it? 8 episodes
What it’s about: Set in 19th-century Dublin and New York, the story begins immediately after the death of Sir Benjamin Guinness, the man responsible for the extraordinary success of the Guinness brewery, and the far-reaching impact of his will on the fate of his four adult children, Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Ben, as well as on a group of Dublin characters who work and interact with the phenomenon that is Guinness.
What we like about it: When Steven Knight, the man who created Peaky Blinders, makes a new TV show, you pay attention. He also made Taboo, See, SAS: Rogue Heroes, and All the Light We Cannot See – and there’s no reason to believe House of Guinness won’t be another banger.
“It’s the extraordinary story of a family who happens to be the inheritors of the biggest brewery in the world. They’re young and are given the task of taking on this incredibly successful brand,” Knight told Netflix.
“The first priority is: Don’t screw it up. And the second priority is to make Guinness even bigger.”
