Prime Video faces backlash after spoiling Weapons in streaming preview

Weapons is now available to watch on digital platforms, but rather than viewers talking about hidden details, it’s the exact opposite – Prime Video is spoiling the movie with an automatic preview.

Zach Cregger’s new movie truly lives up to the hype; a creepy, unsettling mystery that blends dark comedy with supernatural horror. As we said in our five-star review, it “gets under your skin, before concluding two hours of tense set-up with a truly wild pay-off.”

So far, it’s grossed more than $252 million at the global box office against a $38 million budget, making it one of 2025’s big wins. The good news is you can now watch it at home, with Weapons dropping on digital platforms to rent or buy on September 9.

But horror movie fans have a bone to pick with Amazon’s Prime Video: the streaming platform has spoiled the big twist in its preview. It goes without saying that there are spoilers ahead!

Weapons spoiler revealed in Prime Video autoplay scene

If you head to the Weapons landing page on Prime Video, you’ll notice that a key scene starts playing automatically: the moment Gladys reveals her powers to Alex.

It starts with Alex’s parents stabbing themselves in the face with forks, which on its own would have been fine (it’s even in the trailer). But it keeps playing to show Gladys throwing her cursed stick into the water, causing Alex’s parents to stop.

Now, if you’re still reading this, you’ll know that one of the main twists of Weapons is that Gladys is actually a witch who casts a spell to lure the children from Alex’s classroom and uses them to rejuvenate herself.

Plus, since the new movie dropped in August, there have been Gladys spoilers all over social media. But even so, fans don’t believe Prime Video should have made that choice for them.

Taking to Reddit, one wrote, “Went to buy Weapons on Prime and the scene they show literally gives away the twist of the movie? So weird, and disappointing for anyone who didn’t get a chance to see it in theaters.”

“Incoming ‘iTs oUt oF coNteXt’ defense, like the human brain isn’t capable of putting pieces together once you see the characters or setting in the movie lmao,” said another. “Movie trailer spoilers have gotten totally out of control.”

One pointed out that the fork scene was in the trailer, but another replied, “Just the short clip of the fork stabbing was in the trailer, not that it was a witch controlling them.

“I mean, people’s definition of spoilers may vary but personally I got it spoiled for me that it was a witch/magic and I was pretty annoyed. Honestly, even just hearing that the movie had a singular antagonist was more than I wanted to know.”

Others shared similar examples, including this person who said, “HBO does the same thing in their description of Companion. They give away the twist in the first half of the sentence.”

Another commented, “I remember when Longlegs came to Prime being shocked that the description completely spoils major twists in it.”

Some subscribers are only getting the regular trailer playing instead, but even so, you might want to avoid this problem altogether.

There is an easy way to stop scenes automatically playing on Prime Video. All you need to do is head to ‘Account & Settings’, click on ‘Player’ and find the ‘Auto Play’ option, which you can toggle to ‘Off’.
