There’s a simple reason 1923 Season 3 won’t happen

The second season has only just ended, but Yellowstone fans are already wondering if 1923 Season 3 is a possibility.

The lifespans of Taylor Sheridan shows are a little all over the place. 1883, for instance, was only a one-season limited series. The likes of Lioness and Tulsa King are into their second and third seasons, while Yellowstone managed to make it to Season 5.

1923 already broke the Yellowstone prequel rule by getting a second round of life in February 2025, but clearly, there’s still much more of this story to tell.

So, does Taylor Sheridan have more in the works, or should you start saying goodbye to Jacob, Spencer, and the rest? Here’s what we know.

Will there be a 1923 Season 3?

Plans for a third season haven’t been announced, but from previous comments from Taylor Sheridan and the cast, it seems as though there will only be two seasons of 1923.

Sheridan himself described Season 2 as “the second half” of Season 1, which implies that’ll be the end of this Dutton generation.

“This one is different than 1883 where I had the whole thing blocked out in my head. This one, I had no idea what I was going to do,” he told Deadline in 2023.

“I just went on a journey myself and I’m the one that made the call to the network, which is probably the greatest call they ever got. Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I need to do this in two blocks. An eight episode block and a second eight episode block to wrap this up.

“I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice. For them, it is great because they get more content. For me, I get more runway.”

Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer Dutton, also told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023 that the two seasons should be considered “one piece.”

“It’s bookend,” he explained. “It’s still limited, but I think of it as one piece – there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude.”

Really, anyone who’s seen the 1923 Season 2 finale will know that this era is very much wrapped up. We had some casualties (Jack and Alex), and it seemed as though the ranch was in good hands with Spencer taking the reins.

For now, there appears to be peace in the valley, and there’s no clear route for a third season to go down.

1944 will keep the Dutton story going

Since another prequel, 1944, is currently in development, it’s likely we’ll find out what happened to the 1923 characters around 20 years later.

While it’s expected the show will focus on new characters (look out, John Dutton II), the time period means we could see an older version of Spencer, too. (By this point, we wouldn’t expect Jacob and Cara to be around anymore.)

It’ll also continue building on the legacy of the ranch. We know the Duttons have defeated Donald Whitfield, but the upcoming prequel could fill in the gap between those years and fill in viewers on what troubles and triumphs the Duttons faced during that time.

Though, given the Great Depression setting, it’s more likely to include troubles.
