Yellowstone fans have still never forgiven this “horrible” character

The Dutton family in Yellowstone

Yellowstone might be over, but fans of the Taylor Sheridan’s series still can’t get over one particularly difficult character, and still hate her to this day.

For the most part, almost every Yellowstone character is a criminal, killer, or generally unlikable person. That makes it quite a tough competition to take home the crown of being the worst person on the show.

Even the Duttons, despite their family values, aren’t necessarily good people. From Beth’s unforgiving nature to John’s questionable parenting, they aren’t above criticism.

But for fans of the Western TV show, the winner has always been quite clear. And even now that the series is over, they still can’t stop despising her.

Yellowstone fans still hate Evelyn Dutton

Although she only appears in flashback form, Evelyn Dutton is still the subject of fans’ anger to this day. She died prior to the events of the show, but the few times she’s on screen, her character is quickly established as being a harsh parent, particularly with Beth.

Most notably, her attitude and demeanor changes once Beth starts her period in one flashback episode. She tells Beth, “I have to turn you into the man most men will never be, and I’m sorry in advance for doing it, because you’re going to hate it, sweetheart.”

Essentially, Evelyn knew it was a man’s world, and she wanted Beth to grow up tough enough to hold her own. Her answer to that was by treating Beth strictly, putting immense pressure on her.

When Beth’s horse later spooks Evelyn’s, it results in a horrific accident in which Evelyn is crushed to death. Sending Beth to get help, she says, “She did this, let her undo it.”

So not only does Beth grow up facing intense scrutiny from her mother, but she also gets directly blamed for her death. With all this in mind, it’s no wonder Beth grows up to be a vicious, angry adult.

Fans are still mad about it, too. As one Redditor wrote, “She was a horrible human being and traumatized her daughter for life.”

“She was supposedly trying to teach Beth to be a strong woman but that was just straight up abuse,” said another, while a third added, “She was a terrible mother.”

One noted, “As soon as Beth started menstruating, her mother turned that love into hate. So Beth has serious issues which centre around that coming of age time. No one gives Beth enough credit for how much this would have shaped her.”
