Yellowstone fans all have one question about the 1923 Season 2 finale

Spencer Dutton in 1883 standing in a field

It’s anyone’s guess as to how 1923 will close out at the end of Season 2, but one thing Yellowstone fans can’t wrap their head around is how Spencer Dutton fits into things.

There’s only really one question when it comes to the Yellowstone prequel: Will Spencer and Alex get back to Montana?

Spencer’s return has been 1923’s leading arc from the very beginning. The Dutton son ran away to Africa to hunt lions and live in the wild, but when he gets a pleading letter from his Aunt Cara to return and help them save the ranch, he boards a ship with his new wife Alex and sets sail for home.

So, the ranch’s fate rests on Spencer’s shoulders. But this doesn’t sit right with many viewers, who can’t seem to work out what difference his return would make.

The 1923 finale relies on Spencer saving the day

In 1923, the situation for the Duttons becomes dire. In Season 1 alone, they lost John and Emma, and suddenly fell under the financial manipulation of Donald Whitfield, who paid off their loans in a ploy to take ownership of the land.

Plus, Jacob almost died after being shot in a gunfight, at which point Cara wrote to Spencer, asking him to come home. But really, what’s Spencer going to do?

1923 Season 2 Episode 2: Spencer Dutton

“He must get home to help fight for their land but what is he, one man, actually supposed to do once he gets there?” one Redditor asked.

“Same question!!!! What does Spencer bring to the table to get them out of the back taxes problem? Isn’t that the only thing Whitfield holds over them, or am I missing something else?” another agreed.

It’s a fair question. What can Spencer do that Jacob or Jack (or Cara, even) can’t?

Another even pointed out, “The weird thing about this program is that it feels like the set up for the show means that the real action/story doesn’t start until Spencer gets home. But instead 90% of the show will be his journey home, which all feels a bit like filler as a result.”

All this suggests there’s only one outcome: Spencer will kill Donald Whitfield. He’s got brute strength and battle experience on his side, and it’s no stranger to fighting. If he shows up and resorts to tactical violence, that’s one way to solve their problems.
